Romancing the Camellia

Tom Johnson took a job a couple years ago that he knows he'll spend the rest of his productive life finishing. And he's fine with that.

Sitting in the conservatory at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, he breaks down his task to an oversimplified description. "If you walk around Magnolia and you see all the statues," he said, "it's my job to hide them again."

Really, it's his job to make the property — America's last so-called Romantic garden — true to its style and also historically accurate. That means keeping the grounds slightly unkempt and adorned with ancient varieties of camellia and azalea that first unfurled into vibrant blossoms some 200 years ago.

The Judge Arthur Solomon Camellia Trail

 No one was more influential in establishing camellia interest in America during the first half of the 20th century that Judge Arthur Solomon from Savannah, Georgia.
