Camellias are one of the most diversified ornamental plants in the world, and this diversity is clearly demonstrated in the differences found in its species. One of those very different species is featured here today. It is a species native to Southwestern Zhejiang Province and Western Fujian Province in China called Camellia octopetela. For a number of years, this species was simply thought to just a variety of Camellia crapnelliana, but in recent years it has been determined to be a separate species.
Camellia octopetela is significantly different from most of the camellias that most of us are familiar with. This fall blooming species has light yellow flowers that are abundant throughout the plant. This species make a beautiful dense shrub, so it has many landscape possibilities. The foliage has an unusual grayish green color that compliments the masses of light yellow blooms. Also, this plant appears to tolerate more cold than other similar species, so it may be better suited for some colder climates as well.
Camellia octopetela is a very prolific seed setter as well. Its seed has been used as a source of camellia oil in its native environment for centuries. Although Camellia octopetela is significantly different from most species and has very little hybridization potential, this species in itself offers much potential as a landscape component for our gardens.
